Broadening broadband: FCC submits plan to congress

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Tuesday submitted a 10-year plan to congress that would make high-speed Internet available to 100-million homes in the United States. This is a big leap, as today only about half the nation’s population has broadband access. Internet Retailer reports what impacts this plan could have on eCommerce. Video and other rich media could become more widely used sales and marketing tools and in general, make browsing and buying online faster and easier (and even possible) for customers presently on dial-up. On the contrary, the article explains people without access to high-speed Internet are also likely to have lower income levels, meaning increased speed may not significantly increase sales. Still, one industry source told IR, “Every additional customer has some, even small, amount of buying power, so having them more online would be a good thing.” Learn more about the FCC’s plan.

Consumers more likely to buy from companies they follow
Engaging customers via social media makes them more likely to buy. That’s the statement headlining a new consumer research study from Chadwick Martin Bailey. The study reports 67% of those polled are more likely to make purchases from brands they follow on Twitter. Respondents were also able to fill in an answer to: What does it say about a brand if they are not involved with sites like Twitter and Facebook? One female answered, “It shows they are not really with it or in tune with the new ways to communicate with customers.” See the full study.

Facebook begins sending weekly fan page statistics
In an attempt to make fan pages more appealing to brands, Facebook recently began mailing out weekly status reports to page admins, reports Mashable. 5 eCommerce design mistakes to avoid
Helen Bradley of ecommerce-guide.com gives the low-down on five assumptions to avoid making when designing your eCommerce store. She begins with a warning that customers are not as excited about your technologies, including flash introductions (they are distracting and can become a big barrier to sales) and onsite music (it’s annoying). Bradley goes on to discuss other frequent mistakes that can get in the way of the shopping process, from the homepage through to the checkout. Learn what other mistakes to avoid.

Why 70% of online shoppers abandon the cart
In his Multichannel Merchant article, Kevin Moffit states 70% is the average cart abandonment rate, but explains numbers can vary greatly by industry, electronics having the highest and specialty retail stores, the lowest. One major and obvious reason for abandonment is sticker shock, where tax or shipping charges are unknown until item was added to the cart. He stresses less obvious reasons should not be overlooked, such as saved shopping carts (where people have no intention of buying item that day) or adding to cart and then deciding to pick up in store. Moffit says one key to understanding your store’s individual cart abandonment rate is to understand your shoppers’ behavior. Read more.

5 common SEO mistakes you may be making
eConsultancy this week goes back to basics by reporting the five most common search engine optimization (SEO) mistakes found on eCommerce stores. The number one reason cited by the marketing firm is duplicate content. While copying and pasting vendor-provided item descriptions seems easier, it’s not good practice and a shortcut taken all too often by new online merchants. The article further explains that many store owners may write unique content, but then use the content on third-party sites making it once again, unoriginal. Find out the other three SEO mistakes.

Innovation improves e-mail marketing; video shown to increase sales
In the March edition of Internet Retailer, Bill Siwicki explains video and social sharing are two ways online merchants are improving their e-mail marketing campaigns. Siwicki begins explaining how online magazine Thirllist uses video to enhance its story-telling and then quickly transitions into how embedded video is helping eCommerce stores. For example, when Road Runner Sports embedded a video of an athlete endorsing a sneaker, the company saw a 7% increase in its click-through and a five-fold increase in sales of the particular shoe. Learn more about video for e-mail marketing.

Social Media

The #1 reason customers “fan” a retailer on Facebook
Going along with our top story this week, here is some additional Facebook news. Chief Marketer reported results of a ForeSee study explaining how people use social media to shop. The results reveal Facebook dominates other social media outlets for how users choose to interact with their favorite brands. On why users turn to social media, 5% of people report its customer service, 45% use it to learn about products, and the number one reason people fan, friend or follow a brand? To learn about special offers (49%). Get more stats on social media usage.

Who is the mayor of your small business? The GPS-based social networking site, Foursquare has been getting lots of buzz. Foursquare is a social networking tool allowing users to check in at locations from their mobile phones, provide tips for other patrons of those businesses, and create to-do lists. What’s more is that the consumer-driven community guide has a gaming component to encourage participation. Users earn badges and can even become the mayor of a location for frequently a location. celebrates successes:

CEO reflects with reporters at press conference

March 1, 2010 marked the 15th anniversary of Yahoo!’s incorporation (although the company was formed in 1994). For the past decade and a half, the company has been providing content, search, e-mail, small business tools and a slew of other web-related services to individuals and companies. CEO Carol Bartz held a party/press conference at the Yahoo! headquarters, where technology reporters shared in the celebration, keeping the press pass in full sight, of course. Quentin Hardy of Forbes shares highlights of the occasion in a post on the magazine’s technology blog, Velocity. He debunks the myth that Yahoo! is for sale, gives the skinny on it being neck-in-neck with Google for mobile users, how more content and customization options are on the way, and how Yahoo! wants to be the center of every mom’s life. 5 web design facts every merchant should know
Practical eCommerce reminds online merchants that no matter how little involvement you might have with the design and development end of your site, there are at least five facts for which you should be aware. Also, declutter and streamline your site by asking your programmer to use content management systems, CSS, and to not go overboard with HTML tables. Learn more.

94% of shoppers research before buying, but methods vary by industry
It’s no doubt that search engines should be a critical area of focus for online retailers. But, understanding how consumers in your specific industry search can aid in your marketing strategy. Internet Retailer reports that 94% of online consumers perform online research prior to making a purchase, with search engines taking the lead with 61%. Coupon sites, marketing e-mails from retailers, online review sites, and comparison shopping engines are the other methods used. What’s more, IR reports, is the choices differ by vertical. For example, those looking to purchase consumer electronics are more likely to go directly to retail websites for brands they know (59%) or use search engines (45%), while people looking for apparel are not as likely to use search engines, with only 12% of shoppers using them. Instead, those shoppers prefer e-mails (38%) and retail websites (26%). Learn more about searching habits.
